Whenever I meet with a potential new client, I like to ask him what his goals are for his marketing/publicity campaign. More often than not, I get an answer like, “I want to be a #1 New York Times bestseller” or “I want a 7-figure advance on my next book.” While it’s completely normal to have high aspirations, I tend to steer authors toward something more achievable, where actual steps can be made toward achieving that goal. Do you want to reach 10x your newsletter subscribers? Or get 100 book reviews on Amazon? Or sell 20% more than your last book?

Mike Shatzkin said in his opening remarks at Digital Book World 2016, that publishers need to help authors with their marketing efforts.

It is so important to start building buzz with your mailing list months before your book’s pub date. Doing this allows for advanced visibility and awareness for when your book is released. My book, Online Marketing for Busy Authors, will be published in April 2016 and in order to start grabbing people's attention, I started using physical postcards in January.    My publisher generously printed book postcards for me to use several months before the publication of my book. When I talk to my friends who are agents and publishers, they all say they give authors advice and documents that walk them through the online marketing opportunities and timelines. The bigger publishers even have author portals with lots of important and useful information. I wonder then, why do so many authors I speak with say "why didn't someone tell me that."

I heard someone say once that there is a fine line between arrogance and confidence and I immediately thought: That's not true. There's a huge difference.

I feel some people exemplify the difference perfectly. Malala Yousafzai is confident enough to talk with world leaders and ask them to change their policies. Yet she never seems arrogant.

Why is this important? It's an important distinction because we like working with confident people, but we don't like engaging with arrogant people. A UCLA study concluded that likable people ask questions, are genuine and honest, don't seek attention, and smile (among other things). How people perceive you in your social channels can be very important in your career and business.
