4 Digital Marketing Tools Every Author Should Learn

4 Digital Marketing Tools Every Author Should Learn
by Fauzia Burke

The days when authors could expect publishers to do all their marketing are long gone, but unlike others, I think that’s a good thing. The change has forced all of us to become more independent, and have the ability to build a long term relationship with our readers. Many authors still feel that they can farm their online marketing, as a PR and marketing firm I certainly advocate for authors to find expertise when they need it. However new digital tools and technologies, can help you save money for the day-to-day housekeeping. Learning these tools will help save you time and money and allow you more control over your brand.

New Website Builder for Authors

New Website Builder for Authors
by Fauzia Burke
It’s surprising, but authors still ask me if they need a website. The short answer is, “Yes”. I know building and maintaining a website can sound like a daunting, time-consuming task. And if you’re still in the writing or editing process, you may think a website isn’t the best use of your time. But as I've said many times, authors should start building their platform/brand as soon as they have an idea for a book and a website is the foundation of your author brand. Besides, new tools like Pub Site make building and maintaining a professional website quick, easy, and inexpensive (more info on Pub Site below).

Not convinced? Here are five reasons why I think an author website is necessary.

1. Your readers want...

2017 Marketing Trends, and How to Apply Them to Your Promotional Strategy

2017 Marketing Trends, and How to Apply Them to Your Promotional Strategy
by Fauzia Burke
The beginning of the year always brings the onslaught of trend pieces--what’s going to be hot in the coming year, and what you need to pay attention to. When it comes to promoting your book, it’s important to remember that not every “hot” new trend will be applicable to your strategy.

Here are the 2017 trends that I think will have the most impact on the publishing world:

Mobile: We now know that more people get their news from online sources than anywhere else. But beyond that, more content is now being viewed on mobile devices than on desktops. Make sure all your content is optimized for mobile viewing, and that it fits with this new “on the go” lifestyle. This...

Where to Start with Social Media

Where to Start with Social Media
by Fauzia Burke
From all the talk of social media, you may think every author is active and enjoying it. But as I talk to authors one thing is clear, there are lots of them still sitting on the sidelines, lots still saying “I hate social media” and a lot of them wanting to start but feeling overwhelmed. One of the questions I routinely get from authors is, “What should I do with social media? I know I need to do something, but I don’t know where to start.”

It’s no surprise that I believe social media is a powerful tool for building and engaging with an audience--and I’m not just talking about Facebook. I encourage all authors I work with to build...

by Fauzia Burke
I heard there's a rumor going around in book publishing that authors don't need websites. I kid you not, in 2014 I still hear people saying authors don't need a website. There’s really never been a better time to be an author. There is a lot more competition than ever before, but there are also a lot more opportunities. Authors are building community, making a difference and finding great joy in the process.

I own a digital publicity and marketing firm specializing in creating awareness for books and authors and I often hear from authors who feel overwhelmed...

Social Media vs Social Networking

Social Media vs Social Networking
by Fauzia Burke
Although most of us use the terms interchangeably, there is a difference between social media and social networking. For me, understanding the distinctions was a big aha moment. Social Media Social media is the media (content) that you upload -- whether that's a blog, video, slideshow, podcast, newsletter or an eBook. Consider social media as a one-to-many communication method. Although people can respond and comment, you own the content and have to produce (write/record/create) the media yourself.

Your social media goal and strategy: Decide if you want to connect with your audience in the form of a blog, video, newsletter, podcast or eBook. Blogs are...

Best Marketing Options for Authors

Best Marketing Options for Authors
by Fauzia Burke
By Fauzia Burke

As authors, you know there are a lot of marketing options for promoting your book these days. There’s publicity, advertising and of course social media, but before you invest your money and time, it is important to know the benefits and challenges of the three types of marketing options (commonly known as Owned, Paid and Earned media by us marketing geeks).

Owned is media you as an author control. It includes your website/s, social networks, blogs, videos, etc. Paid is media that is bought. It includes ads: print, broadcast and online (banner and search). Earned is media that is gained through good publicity. If your goal is CREDIBILITY, publicity wins as the best option. Reviews and interviews will do more for your...
